Using the wisdom of the
alternate view

Deep democracy is an approach
used to enable teams to make decisions which
everyone can commit to and bring to fruition. As
it works on the basis of consensus, it's not
appropriate to all decisions. However, I've
created a version that works for getting buy in to
the decisions that have already been
made.
1. State the decision
2. Ask for opinions on the
decision
3. Ensure you ask for alternate opinions
(surface the "no")
4. If necessary pose the alternate view to
surface alternate views
5. Ask if other have this view (spread the
"no")
6. Acknowledge that those with
dissenting views are not getting what they
want
7. Ask what it would take for them to come
along with the decision
8. Build in the wisdom of the alternate
view into the decision as appropriate
e.g. "Ok, so we'll launch in September
(original decision) and we'll have immediate
meetings with Estates and IT before we sign off on
the final plan (wisdom of the alternate point of
view).
When could this work for you? In what form or
variation?
